i'm charlie black: an animator, illustrator and filmmaker whose just graduated from Manchester School of Art, reading illustration with animation.

my practice involves mixing multiple media, some including film, printmaking and handrawn images, to create experimental collages of movement and pattern. through these varying techniques, i use my practice to better understand the chaotic world i encounter. taking from first-hand experiences alongside academic writing, my work collides subjectivity and objectivity into more candid and emotionally charged depictions of research. the power of both moving and still images can engage audiences into socio-political subjects that could seem inaccessible or overwhelming, such as the climate crisis.
most recently, my practice has been engaged with understanding human’s connections with green spaces and the influence of cultural and institutional systems that seek to separate ourselves from nature. i hope to continue promoting the protection of green spaces and using using experimental animation as a form of research to engage audiences emotionally with more complex, intimidating subjects, like the climate crisis.
