i'm charlie black - an animator, illustrator and aspiring filmmaker.
my practice involves mixing multiple media, some including film, printmaking and handrawn images, to create experimental collages of movement and pattern. through these varying techniques, i use my practice to better understand the chaotic world i encounter. taking from first-hand experiences alongside academic writing, my work collides subjectivity and objectivity into more candid and emotionally charged depictions of research. the power of both moving and still images can engage audiences into socio-political subjects that could seem inaccessible or overwhelming, such as the climate crisis.
most recently, my practice has been engaged with understanding human’s connections with green spaces and the influence of cultural and institutional systems that seek to separate ourselves from nature. understanding and revealing these intrinsic relationships through my practice, i hope to engage conversations of the climate crisis through emotions rather than bombardments of data and information.
